چکیده

APPROACH Consider the simulated SW06 scenario with a “true” bottom consisting of 3 sediment layers (to taling 22m in depth extent – a medium thickness) where all three sediment layers are each defined by a linear sound-speed profile (and constant densities) all over a half-space (constant sound-speed and density) as seen in Fig. 1. For the inversion processing we shall (as in earlier work) assume that: the bottom consists of a single linear sediment layer (specified by , , and , over a half-space with sound-speed ), all water depths will be 78 to 86m (“true” 79.7m), the ocean sound-speed will vary with depth only (no inversion on ),

Broadband synthetic aperture geoacoustic inversion.

A typical geoacoustic inversion procedure involves powerful source transmissions received on a large-aperture receiver array. A more practical approach is to use a single moving source and/or receiver in a low signal to noise ratio (SNR) setting. This paper uses single-receiver, broadband, frequency coherent matched-field inversion and exploits coherently repeated transmissions to improve estim...

Range aliasing in frequency coherent geoacoustic inversion.

This paper discusses the effects of frequency selection on source localization and geoacoustic inversion methods that use frequency coherent objective functions. Matched-field processors based on frequency-coherent objective functions often have rapidly fluctuating range ambiguity surfaces. Insufficient sampling in frequency domain results in range aliasing terms that affect geoacoustic inversi...

Inversion for Geoacoustic Model Parameters in Range-Dependent Shallow Water Environments from the SW06 Experiment

The ability to predict sound propagation in shallow water is limited by the knowledge of the geoacoustic properties of the ocean bottom. The long term goals of this research are: (1) to develop full field inversion methods for estimating parameters of geoacoustic models of the ocean bottom and the associated uncertainties in the model parameter values; and (2) to evaluate the performance of the...

Geoacoustic Inversion and the Evaluation of Model and Parameter Uncertainties

The development of new geoacoustic inversion procedures for use into the kHz frequency regime, the development of methods for estimating the entire posteriori probability densities of the geoacoustic parameters being investigated along with the mapping of these parameter uncertainties through to characterizations of applied interest (e.g. transmission loss), and the demonstration of their use i...

Bayesian geoacoustic inversion using wind-driven ambient noise.

This paper applies Bayesian inversion to bottom-loss data derived from wind-driven ambient noise measurements from a vertical line array to quantify the information content constraining seabed geoacoustic parameters. The inversion utilizes a previously proposed ray-based representation of the ambient noise field as a forward model for fast computations of bottom loss data for a layered seabed. ...

14: Geoacoustic Inversion in Shallow Water

A critical knowledge gap in our understanding of the interaction of sound with the ocean bottom is the frequency dependence of sound speed and attenuation in marine sediments. The long term goals of this research project are related to the investigation of dispersion of sound speed and attenuation at low frequencies (< 2 kHz) in different types of marine sediments. The research involves develop...
